"Clinical Decision Support System in Laboratory Medicine"

When: Tuesday 27 August 2024

Time: 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Where:  Online Webinar

Lecture Summary: There is an increasing focus on health information technology (HIT) and how data from different health care settings are been digitalized. In recent times, HIT advances have revolutionized the laboratory medicine model. There has been a progression from a Traditional Laboratory to a Leading Laboratory, focused on the patient, that does not just intervene in clinical decision-making but also makes clinical decisions, and measures its success and shortages through performance indicators, like the new cases diagnosed.

Lately, several new tools have been developed for HIT, e.g., Clinical Decision Support systems (CDSS), which are defined as any digital solution designed to help healthcare professionals make clinical decisions. Within laboratories, their major use has been limited to Computerized Provider Order Entry systems. CDSS encompass a rich set of tools that have the potential to drive significant improvements in laboratory testing. Moreover, other tools related to Artificial Intelligence (AI), including neural networks or machine learning, have been used in various fields like LM. However, the main challenge is their application in daily clinical practice.

My purpose is to show how we have adopted a CDSS in our clinical laboratory and to explore the main applications of CDSS in laboratory medicine with some real-life scenarios, including diagnostic support, clinical management, patient safety, workflow improvements, and cost containment.
