AACB Members working in Australia can apply for CMLS Certification, FREE OF CHARGE, through the AACB.

  CMLS-certified Members may choose to have their details displayed on the CMLS public register, and

may use the post nominals CMLT, CMLS or CCS.

The following minimum requirements must be met to gain your CMLS certification.

Certification Level Minimum Requirements
All levels
  • Declaration of competency assessment, in their current role, by applicant's supervisor using the CMLS pro forma.
  • Meeting the requirements for CPD from an accredited CPD provider in the previous 2 years.#

# If you are participating in the AACB CPD scheme but do not have a record of meeting the goals for the previous 2 years, you can still apply and will be granted Conditional Certification.
Conditions Certification is valid for 2 years only, after which you will need to have a valid CPD record to move to full certification.

Technical Officer
  • Completed a relevant VET sector course at Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) 5 or 6 which permits membership as a technical officer of a member organisation, or
  • A higher relevant qualification such as a science degree, or
  • An overseas qualification assessed as equivalent by the Australian Institute of Medical and Clinical Scientists;
  • Minimum 2 years relevant recent experience
Medical Scientist
  • Completed a relevant degree in Science or Applied Science (AQF Level 7 or above) which permit membership as a scientist of a member organisation, or
  • An overseas qualification assessed as equivalent by the Australian Institute of Medical and Clinical Scientists, or
  • An associate qualification conferred by the Australian Institute of Medical Technologists before 1st December 1973;
  • Minimum 2 years relevant recent experience
Clinical Scientist
  • Completed a relevant degree in Science or Applied Science (AQF Level 7 or above) which permit membership as a scientist of a member organisation, or
  • An overseas qualification assessed as equivalent by the Australian Institute of Medical and Clinical Scientists, or
  • An associate qualification conferred by the Australian Institute of Medical Technologists before 1st December 1973;
  • In addition to the above, one or more of the following qualifications:
    • Fellowship of Australasian Association for Clinical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine;
    • Fellowship of the Australian Institute of Medical and Clinical Scientists;
    • Fellowship of the Australian Society for Microbiology (Medical Microbiology or Clinical Microbiology);
    • Fellowship of the Human Genetics Society of Australasia (Biochemical Genetics, Cytogenetics or Molecular Genetics);
    • Fellowship of the Australian Society of Cytology;
    • Fellowship of the Faculty of Science (by examination) of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia;
    • Doctorate of Philosophy, AQF 10 or equivalent doctoral level degree, in a subject relevant to the scope of diagnostic testing of the laboratory being supervised.
    • For ART laboratories, meets the criteria in the RTAC code of practice for scientific directors.
    • For Bone Marrow Transplant laboratories, meets the requirements of the Bone Marrow Transplant Scientists Association of Australasia (BMTSAA).
  • Minimum 2 years relevant recent experience
