Vale Christopher Rebeiro 1954-2022

BSc MSc MAACB MBA Grad Dip

It is with much sadness we announce the passing of our good friend and work colleague, Chris Rebeiro.

Chris was born in India and moved to Perth, Australia, with his family as a young boy where he completed his schooling and tertiary education.

He attained his Bachelor of Science in 1975 at the University of Western Australia and for most of his professional life he continually furthered his knowledge through formal and informal learning.

Two notable achievements being completing his MBA studies at the University of Canberra in 2005 and obtaining his MAACB in 1980.

Chris’s professional history includes, working as Head of Department Biochemistry Services, Gribbles Pathology, SA (1992-1995). He then spent 3 years in Kuala Lumpur where he was instrumental in establishing pathology services in Malaysia.

Chris also spent time working at Whyalla Hospital, St John of God Pathology and ACT Pathology.

In 2007 he decided to move to Victoria where he spent time as Director, Eastern Health Pathology, Business Director, Radiology services at Northern Health before accepting the position of Deputy Director, Business & Operations at The Royal Melbourne Hospital, Pathology Department (2016 – 2020).

After a brief but notable contribution at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute he moved back to South Australia to be closer to family.

Chris was actively involved with the AACB over many years. He successfully passed his membership exams in 1980 and from 1984 to 1991 was a committee member in various state branches. From 2009 to 2011 he held the position of Director of AACB Services, the commercial arm of Australian Association of Clinical Biochemists.

Chris had many personal interests. He was very generous with his time participating in various forms of volunteer work. This included local councils, in the health care industry and a number of developing countries. Chris was a strong advocate for safety and quality in health care, and was also a major contributor to the ‘Quality Assurance for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Medical services’ in South Australia. Chris enjoyed reading, music and prided himself with his level of fitness, participating in several outdoor sports including marathon running.

Chris will be remembered as a person who contributed generously to biochemistry, made the most of life and who always treated others with kindness and respect. His personality and good humour meant that he had many friends and a wide circle of acquaintances. We fondly remember our friend and work colleague who was always helpful and ready to teach, advise, and would support us when needed.

Chris leaves behind his wife Lucy, children Mikela and Tristan, daughter-in-law Kristine and grandchildren Orlando and Indigo.
