Impact of Laboratory Operational Decisions on Patient Care

The impact of recent operational changes on specimen quality, turnaround time and patient care will be discussed. First, the clinical utility of interactive dashboards to monitor errors, delays and productivity and identify areas for improvement will be reviewed. Second, the implementation of electronic alerts to guide testing order and results review will be discussed. Finally, the benefit of positive patient identification in phlebotomy will be outlined.

 Speaker: Dr Stacy Melanson    

Stacy Melanson, M.D., Ph.D. is the Vice Chair of the Clinical Laboratories at Brigham and Women's Hospital (Boston, MA, USA), Associate Clinical Director, Mass General Brigham Enterprise Laboratory Services and Associate Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School. She completed her residency in Clinical Pathology at Massachusetts General Hospital in 2004. She is involved in several international organizations including the Association for Diagnostics and Laboratory Medicine, College of American Pathologists and International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine. Clinically and academically she is interested in optimizing toxicology testing and services and improving laboratory operations.
